Industrial Visit at KALPATARU Power Transmission Limited

The Department of E&I, SSTC had arranged Industrial Visit KALPATARU Power Transmission Limited near Raipur on 10th October 2015 & 5th November 2015. The KALPATARU Power Transmission Limited was situated nearly 60 km from the Bhilai in the District of Raipur (Sejbahar).

KPTL has production facilities at Gandhinagar (Gujarat) where it has two fabrication plants equipped with latest CNC punching / drilling machines, galvanizing bath and a tower testing and R & D station offering end to end solutions.

In 2013, KPTL set up a new state-of-the-art plant at Raipur, capital city of the State of Chhattisgarh in Central India. ISO 9001 & 14001 certified, the Company has well-trained staff, well-defined testing equipment and established quality assurance plan offering international standard quality products.

Total Installed Capacity: More than 180,000 MTs per annum.

The process is mainly divided into three sections namely FABRICATION, QC (Quality Control), GALVANIZATION. First of all, angles and plates are brought from various steel industries. The machines are equipped to process the steel conforming to BSEN, ASTM, JIS, DIN, IS, AS & Euro norm specifications. These angles and plates are made of either MILD STEEL or HIGH TENSILE STEEL. These are differentiated by a code and are kept in a RAW YARD.

Then comes the FABRICATION SECTION where angles and plates are fabricated for further process. This section includes CNC SHOP i.e. Cut Punch Stamp Shop and the MANUAL SHOP. Here BENDING AND NOTCHING is done by a machine. The pressure to drive the machine is monitored by a HYDRAULIC PRESSURE Measurement technique. Angles and plates are then brought to the next unit where they undergo DEGREASING, process in an ACID TANK, PICKLING TANK (Pickling is a metal surface treatment used to remove impurities, such as stains, inorganic contaminants, rust or scale from ferrous metals), RINSING TANK, FLUX TANK, DRYING ZONE (Thermocouple is used here to keep a check on temperature), ZINC BATH (temperature inside the zinc bath is in range 420-460 C). Byproduct of the reaction in Zinc Bath is sold to the fertilizer plants.

The byproducts of Zinc Bath include Zinc Sulphide and Zinc Dross. Moreover, the chemicals and wastes are treated as per environmental standards. After these processes, material undergoes QUENCHING (It is rapid cooling of a work piece to obtain certain material properties), PASSIVATION (It is the use of a light coat of a protective material, such as metal oxide, to create a shell against corrosion) (Here, sodium dichromate i.e.) Na2Cr2O7 is used for passivation). The last process before BUNDLING includes treatment of final product in EFFLUENT TREATMENT PLANT (This treatment neutralizes the effect of acid by adding lime).

Now, the final products obtained are ready for bundling for the structure of Transmission Line. Tower is then laid down horizontally to make the transmission tower. This process is called as PROTO PROCESS. Once the Transmission Tower is ready, it undergoes TESTBED TESTING to check its strength.
