A TWO DAY CASE STUDY METHOD WORKSHOP AT FMS, SSGI

Faculty of Management Studies, Shri Shankaracharya Group of Institutions organized Two-day Case Study Workshop on 16 and 17 September, 2016 which intended to provide a platform for academicians and students to come and present case studies in the area of business and management. The workshop aimed to highlight real life challenges and incidents experienced by people working in corporate world. The case study workshop is an initiative by FMS, SSGI to provide a great learning forum to the participants who are planning to develop and publish case studies. The workshop addressed various issues and challenges faced by the educators and trainers in case-based teaching environment. Dr. Souren Sarkar, Head and Professor, FMS welcomed the speaker and inaugurated the session with his speech. Dr. P.B.Deshmukh , Director, SSTC also provided his insights about case study method and discussed its importance in todays pedagogy method. Mrs. Jaya Mishra, Vice – President, SSTC congratulated FMS for organizing workshop and interacting with speakers of academia. Shri. I.P.Mishra, President, SGES greeted Dr. Tanmoy De and congratulated everyone for organizing workshop for betterment of students.

Speaker’s Profile: Dr.Tanmoy De PhD is the Associate Professor at Institute of Management and Information Science, Bhubneshwar holding an experience of 13 years in Education and 5 years in Corporate. His cases had been published in various national and international journals. Dr. De is member of many professional bodies like AIMA, ISTE etc are few to mention. He has chaired many FDS and Research Methodology workshops and seminars conducted in various parts of country and abroad.

Importance of Case Learning and Case Analysis Workshop:
Case studies are a form of problem-based learning, where you present a situation that needs a resolution. A typical business case study is a detailed account, or story, of what happened in a particular company, industry, or project over a set period of time. The learner is given details about the situation, often in a historical context. The key players are introduced. Objectives and challenges are outlined. This is followed by specific examples and data, which the learner then uses to analyze the situation, determine what happened, and make recommendations. The depth of a case depends on the lesson being taught. A case study can be two pages, or 20 or more pages. A good case study makes the reader think critically about the information presented, and then develop a thorough assessment of the situation, leading to a well-thought- out solution or recommendation. Case studies are a great way to improve a learning experience, because they get the learner involved, and encourage immediate use of newly acquired skills.

This interactive Workshop will train the participants in case based teaching and prepare them for writing cases for class room and publication. The curriculum at business school around the world has been based on the analysis of real world cases. Teachers have found that an occasional, case study can help them assess students ability to synthesize, evaluate and apply information and concepts learned in class lectures and text. There will be discussion and hands on exercise to understand this internationally used tool in management educations. Since most of our students do not have industry experience, they can understand the theory and practice of management better in the context of case studies of various organizations. The focus of the Workshop will be on discussing ways of handling case by a faculty with different groups of students. The case study Workshop is an initiative to provide a great learning forum to the participants who are planning to develop and publish their case studies. The Workshop will also address various issues and challenges faced by the educators and trainers in a case based teaching environment.

About the workshop:

  1. Day-1: Aimed to enable the development of writing case studies; participants learnt the theory behind developing a good case study and the guiding principles of writing case studies. The participants were provided by real life scenario cases by the Speaker and discussion took place about utilizing necessary tools and techniques required to solve and present the case studies.
  2. Day – 2: Interactive discussion, highlighting the speaker’s insights into the process of case writing and participants make small presentations about the case lets given to them on Day 1.

The sessions were organized on using cases as a pedagogical tool and teaching total course through cases. The workshop organizers used due diligently to ensure that they covered a variety of cases. The program was conducted by Ms. Nikita Upadhyay and Ms. Tanuka Bhattacharya and student organizing team.
